Yet they become dynamic, newer community traditions, with artistic, informal, and social meanings and practices that make them forms of folklore as well as commoditized culture. Winter Carnival is the first volume in a new Utah State University Press series titled Ritual, Festival, and Celebration and edited by folklorist Jack Santino.

Insightful, Entertaining, and Enlightening!

An excellent ethnography of the winter festival in McCall, Idaho. Gabbert is an excellent ethnographer with a very nuanced understanding of the relationship of community to the winter festival. The book is not only well-written but very entertaining, Gabbert provides insightful theoretical analysis but also infuses her ethnography with humor and lets the personality of her informants shine through. The book is approachable and appropriate for the scholar but also is accessible enough for the general public.
