Received this book last week and could not put it ...

Received this book last week and could not put it down! I have gone back and forth between eating organic chicken, being vegetarian, and vegan for 5 years...I finally made the decision a month ago to go completely plant based and also prove to my very carnivorous son that you can get "cut" eating only plants. However, all of the information out there on how exactly to lose weight while maintaining and building muscle eating a plant based diet falls short, is confusing, or just plain doesn't make sense from a health point of view. UNTIL, I read this book! Robert tells his story, includes many vegan bodybuilders stories, gives workout routines AND meal plans! I really wasn't expecting to get in all in one place! The stories are inspirational while being believable and also doable. I understand so much more about how the body functions and how to get results. DEFINITELY worth every penny.

Vegan or not this is the best clear guide to getting shredded!

Fantastic book if you are vegan or not. Great advice on what to eat, also some delicious recipes included! Workout advice is solid and information on why veganism is good for your body is presented in a non-judgmental, clear and logical way. Something I will read over and over to keep me on track and you HAVE to try the Way Better Mac and Cheese - out of this world :)

THE HANDBOOK FOR VEGAN BODYBUILDING

I bought Robert’s first book back in 2012, about a year after first trying to go vegan. I was about 260lbs, then lost about 40lbs in my first year of going vegan without even trying. The problem was, I felt like I still had a significant amount of body fat and wanted to do something about it. I started working out at the gym, but had no clue about nutrition or lifting weight. Vegan Bodybuilding and Fitness guided me for a couple of years and I was able to make significant strength gains in the gym eating only plants. For example, my bench press 1 rep max went from 205lbs to 330lbs in about 2 years. During this time, I also gained 20lbs, while bodyfat % declined from 26% to 22%.

Fast-forward a couple of years. I saw that Robert was writing a new book, SHRED IT, and I ordered a copy as soon as it was available. I was eager to cut down some of the body fat that remained from my pre-vegan days. I was sitting around 240lbs at 22% bodyfat. In this book, Robert details the changes he’s made throughout the years to his diet, transitioning from protein heavy mock meats, to a whole foods plant based approach while dropping body fat.

There are a few things about this book that I thought were super helpful.
1. There are multiple case studies of vegan transformations in the book. These are real people that you can find on social media -Very inspiring stories.
2. There are also about 60 pages of recipes from vegan athletes. From these, you’ll be able to get an idea of how much food you actually need to eat. I think one of the common pitfalls of veganism is simply under-eating. I was amazed at the results I obtained after increasing my food intake.
3. And finally, there are about 50 pages of plant-based athletes. This is great to point you in the direction of other forums in which these athletes contribute to the vegan athlete body of knowledge. Most of these people are active on social media where they share their experiences and thoughts on vegan nutrition and fitness topics.

I’ve included a picture of my own transformation after reading SHRED IT. The two pictures are one year apart, February 2015 to February 2016. 240lbs at 22% bodyfat to 225lbs at 18% bodyfat. Since then, I’ve been able to cut another 15lbs, and I’m now sitting at 210lbs, 16% bodyfat; this is the lightest and leanest I’ve ever been as an adult. I’m still on my way to getting “shredded” with slow, sustained weight loss and muscle gain. My goal is to get around 200lbs at 10% bodyfat.

Robert’s advice has been invaluable! For a super small investment, there is a ton of knowledge packed in SHRED IT and it will pay back in no time.
