An aftermath of the war.

From 1975 to 1996, more than one million people have made the trip from Vietnamese shores to other Southeastern Asian countries braving weather, hunger, dehydration, storms, and pirates. About 500,000 others have drown or died at seas. In spite of these ordeals, these people keep rushing to the seas to flee communism. Had they had the means, the majority would have left their country.
These are the stories of 19 people who left their homeland on rickety boats, their ordeals at seas, their lives in refugee camps, and their relocation in western countries. They risked their lives to look somewhere else for FREEDOM they could not find in their country.
There are many waves of refugees throughout the years. People from the first wave were mostly professionals and went almost immediately to the U.S. or other western countries. Refugees from subsequent waves traveled in rickety boats, were less well schooled and spent a longer time in the Asian refugee camps.
The authors are to be congratulated for bringing this topic to the forefront.

A wonderful book about real and courageous people

This book is the most moving book I have ever read.

It presents the life a Vietnamese people after 1975 through the stories of 19 vietnamese boat people who immigrated to the US after sometimes several attempts. The stories are told in simple and humble terms. They describe the life under communist ruling and the fear and courage to escape it. The book shows the life in the refugee camps around South East Asia. It is also a book about hope of a better life and about the adjustement to the American language and the American way of life. It also shows how these admirable people integrated in the US society.

The author should be congratulated for telling this untold stories that everybody who heard of Vietnam should know. All my respect and admiration to the Vietnamese people who suffered so much for so long.

While innovation may be the lifeblood of technology based industry, it does not guarantee success to the individual firm within it. The ability to bring useful and desirable products to market in a timely, cost-effective fashion requires the unique talents of managers armed with an arsenal of modern principles and methodologies specifically geared to the technology invention and innovation process. But even in technology based firms, many managers have only scant technical background, while scientists and engineers may have little or no management training. And courses on managing technology based firms are currently taught only in a meager handful of universities. This book grew out of Michael J. C. Martin's experiences developing and teaching courses in managing technological innovation-entrepreneurship to business, engineering, and science students. It provides a dynamic framework within which managers from virtually any professional background can develop efficient, highly productive work systems guaranteed to maximize a high-tech firm's competitive edge. Throughout, the emphasis is on leveraging a company's strategic advantage. Libro fundamental para la gestión de la innovación....

Aunque el libro es del '94, y para el ritmo de cambios que se produce en las empresas de alta-tecnología (tanto en los modos de gestión como en el uso de las tecnologías), este libro es un clásico.

Para mí es un clásico, no solamente porque es de los pocos que tratan el tema de la gestión de la innovación, ciertamente escurridizo, sino porque aborda el tema de una manera muy científica y detallada. Quizás, sea justamente esta también una carencia, la multitud de datos asociados a las opiniones de diferentes autores (cada capítulo tiene una larga lista de referencias) llega a desbordar y hacer perder la idea fundamental que se transmite.

Viendo otros títulos del mismo tema (Making Innovation Work) que tratan el tema de una manera más organizada, se puede comprobar que los enfoques que ahora se proponen como novedosos, están perfectamente apuntados, incluso detallados (y con más figuras que lo explican incluso mejor) que los actuales.

En cualquier caso, extraña que sobre un tema tan esencial para el futuro de occidente que fundamentalmente sobrevivirá con una correcta gestión de la innovación y el capital intelectual, haya tan poca literatura (y buena) que cubra este tema. Por suerte, la aproximación que ofrece este libro es de las mejores que existen.

"Making Innovation Work" ofrece una visión bastante más en la línea del "How-to". Con una redacción más asequible una mejor estructura en la exposición.

The not so perfect ally

William Dalrymple knows his subject from the inside—at least as inside as a western writer is able. He lives in India and is proud that his books sell well in the subcontinent. His mastery of the sources and familiarity with both the broad sweep of history and the details of people and places is clear on every page of his essay.

When I picked up the book at a Literature Festival, I knew for a fact that this is going to be magnificent. A few days into reading, and I knew I wasn’t wrong. I was hooked onto it. The effect the writing had on me was almost immediate. Every time I opened the book to read it, the characters came out alive. I grew so fond of the characters, that I had them on my mind even after I closed the book. That, in all probability is the power of portrayal. After the actual event in history nearly 100 years ago, life has once again been bequeathed to them through the book. These individuals now hold a very distinctive place in my heart, especially the protagonist- Queen Sethu Lakshmi Bayi. Effortlessly, I was able to make a personal connection with the writing and without a doubt, every other reader would too. The effort that has been put into the book is incredible and nearly unimaginable. 6 years of massive research and here is an outcome that is so majestic. The book promises to leave you educated on the history of Kerala while making sure it holds your interest till the end. This beautiful and engaging rendering of the story of the Queens of Travancore is a must-read and I highly recommend it!

Not for beginners.

This book is a more condensed and advanced text than many available in the market. It is clearly not for the novice and not recommended for light reading. Its mainly a reference grammer that is more compact than wright's but one which incorporates the finer points of classical arabic. If you are a beginner this may not be the book for you. Wrights would be a better option for you, or if you are interested in something thinnner Nahmad and haywood would be perfect. Once you gain a grasp of the language and would like a grammer strictly for reference only then this book might suit you.

A reference grammar for arabic students and teachers

'A Grammar of Classical Arabic' by Professor Wolfdietrich Fischer is arguably one of the reference grammar books in arabic, not only for students but also for teachers. I use this book quite extensively for the details it provides on a number of very specific topics, where smaller pocket grammars cannot help. For an even more comprehensive book on arabic grammar, I believe the only option is French linguist and orientalist Silvestre de Sacy's 'Grammaire arabe à l’usage des élèves de l’École Spéciale des Langues Orientales Vivantes', first published in 1810.
